Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Lakeway Owner’s Guide

We see this failure most often after a spring breaks. The spring carries the door’s weight; when it goes, the full load drops onto the cables and drums. Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has used three primary drum families across their residential lines, and mixing them up is the most common parts mistake we correct in Lakeway.

Standard-lift drums (4-inch diameter) fit most Clopay Classic, Premium, and Avante series with 7-foot or 8-foot doors and standard 12-inch radius tracks. The part number usually starts with 400-8 or 400-96, stamped on the drum face.

High-lift drums (6-inch diameter) appear on Clopay Coachman and Grand Harbor carriage-house doors where the track rises steeply before the horizontal run. These need longer cables, typically 156 inches for an 8-foot door versus 132 inches for standard lift.

Vertical-lift drums are rare in residential but show up on Clopay commercial-grade Thermacore installations in Lakeway’s lakefront properties with tall ceilings.

We stock OEM Clopay drums and cables from IDC and Raynor, which match Clopay’s cable wind specs exactly. Aftermarket drums from some suppliers run softer cast aluminum and groove faster. For a door you plan to keep another decade, the OEM or matched-grade aftermarket is worth the difference.

To identify your part: look for the Clopay model sticker on the door’s interior side, then measure drum diameter with the door down and count cable wraps. Or just read us the numbers when you call.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• The door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. When a drum slips on the torsion tube or a cable frays unevenly, the door torques sideways in the track. In Lakeway’s humidity, we’ve seen rust pitting on the drum bore cause micro-slippage that owners mistake for a track problem.
• Cable unspooled or bunched at the bottom bracket. This means the drum’s cable grooves are worn smooth, or the drum itself has cracked and lost its winding geometry. The cable has no place to seat, so it falls off under load.
• Loud grinding or clicking during opening. A cracked drum flexes against the torsion tube. The sound is metallic and rhythmic, once per revolution. We heard this exact symptom last month on a Clopay Premium in Rough Hollow; the drum had a hairline crack invisible until removal.
• Door slams closed from halfway up. If the cable has jumped the drum groove, the door loses lift on one side. The remaining spring torque twists the door, and the safety cables (if present) catch it unevenly. This is hard on the opener and dangerous if someone is beneath it.
• Visible fraying, rust, or broken strands on the cable. Clopay cables are 7×19 galvanized aircraft cable, rated for 1,900 pounds breaking strength. Once you see three or more broken strands in a one-inch section, the cable is living on borrowed time. Lakeway’s lake air accelerates corrosion at the bottom bracket where condensation collects.

There is a safe middle ground here, and then there is a hard stop.

What you can check: with the door closed and the opener disconnected, inspect the cables for fraying and the drums for cracks or groove wear. Look for the Clopay model label. Measure drum diameter if you can do so without touching the torsion hardware. This is observation only.

What you should not attempt: winding or unwinding a torsion spring to release cable tension, removing a set-screw drum from a loaded torsion tube, or cutting a cable to length and expecting it to seat properly. A standard Clopay 16×7 door weighs 150-200 pounds. The torsion spring stores enough energy to lift that weight hundreds of times; releasing it incorrectly can break fingers, lacerate arms, or worse. We have seen DIY drum swaps in Lakeway where the owner reinstalled the drum backwards, reversing the cable wind and launching the door off the track on the first cycle.
