Which Raynor Models This Applies To

Raynor has used several drum and cable configurations across its residential lines. The most common in Lakeway homes are the Admiral II, Admiral 1000, and BuildMark series, along with older Centura and General doors still running from the 1990s and 2000s. The drum diameter, cable length, and fitting style vary by door height and track configuration. A standard 7-foot Raynor door typically takes a 4-inch diameter drum with 1/8-inch aircraft-grade cable, while 8-foot doors need a longer drum hub and correspondingly longer cable.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Raynor’s newer Admiral II doors use a slightly different drum casting than the original Admiral series. The hub depth and set-screw placement differ by about 3/16 inch. Mix them and the cable winds uneven, which eats the drum in months. We check the part number stamped on the drum collar, or measure the old drum’s hub depth and shaft diameter before pulling anything off the truck.

• The door lifts unevenly or one side hangs lower. This means one cable has stretched, slipped, or broken, so the drum on that side is doing all the work. The torsion spring still applies force, but it’s pulling lopsided, and that twists the door panel.
• You see frayed, rusted, or kinked cable strands. Cables fatigue at the drum wrap point first, where the bend stress concentrates. In Lakeway’s humidity, especially down near the lake, surface rust accelerates the fraying. A kinked cable has already exceeded its yield point and will fail soon.
• The cable has slipped off the drum and is dangling loose. This happens when the drum grooves wear smooth or the cable tension drops too low. The set-screw may have backed out, or the drum itself has cracked at the hub. Either way, running the opener makes it worse.
• Loud grinding or popping during door travel. A cracked drum doesn’t seat the cable in clean wraps. The cable jumps grooves, pops against the track, and grinds flat spots into the aluminum. By the time you hear it, the drum is usually scored beyond saving.
• The door is stuck crooked in the opening and won’t move. One cable has fully released its tension. The opener or spring is still trying to lift, but with no cable engagement on one side, the door binds in the track. Forcing it risks bending the track or popping a roller.

What you should not do is loosen the set screws on a loaded torsion spring to swap a drum, or try to wind cable onto a drum with tension still in the system.
